A Greensburg man charged with murder following a fatal Hart County traffic accident will face a trial on Aug. 22.
Edwin Pierce, 62, of Greensburg, faces one count of murder and one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He pleaded not guilty in Hart County Circuit Court this week.
According to the Kentucky State Police, on April 7, Pierce was traveling westbound on Ky. 218 in his 1998 Ford Explorer when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by D.L. Bryant, 58, of Hardyville.
Bryant was pronounced dead by Hart County Coroner Jeff Roten while Pierce was transported to T.J. Samson Community Hospital and later flown to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of injuries.
Alcohol was allegedly a contributing factor in the accident. Court documents listed Pierce?s blood-alcohol level as being above .18 percent.
The documents also stated that Pierce had previously twice been convicted, within the last five years, of operating a vehicle under the influence.
A final pretrial conference is scheduled for Aug. 10.
