PART TWO

THE DESCENDANTS OF AMBROSE HUFFMAN

Written and Compiled by John H. Huffman, Sr.

Ambrose Huffman was born November 22, 1753, the seventh of nine children born to German immigrant parents, Johannes Henrich and Elizabeth Catherine (Schuster) Hofmann. They had five daughters and four sons. Ambrose Huffman was the only one of the three brothers to fight in the American Revolutionary War. On July 1, 1780, he entered the Continental Army as a drafted militiaman with the rank of Private. His term of service was eighteen months, and he was twenty-seven years old. Ambrose was assigned to Captain Posey’s Company, First Virginia Regiment, First Virginia, Troop. He participated in the battles of Guilford Courthouse and Camden. Ambrose was wounded in the left arm at the Battle of Camden and transferred to Salisbury, Maryland for the remainder of the war. He received his Army Discharge on January 1, 1782. After the Revolutionary War Ambrose returned home to Virginia, where he married Mary Railsback. They lived on one hundred and forty-four acres of land in Culpeper County (now Madison County), where he was a planter and a farmer. Eight of their eleven children were born in Virginia.

In September of 1797, Ambrose sold his land and, along with his family and other relatives, departed for Kentucky via the Cumberland Gap. Ambrose Huffman was the first of the three brothers to settle in what is now Barren County, Kentucky. In August of 1798, he acquired two hundred acres of “second-rate” land in Green County, Kentucky, located on the headwaters of the Big Barren River. Ambrose obtained the land based on an Act of the Kentucky General Assembly passed in 1797 that encouraged settlers and granted relief from land payments in return for living on and improving their property. He did not receive any property under the Land Warrant Bounty System for his service in the Revolutionary War. On September 17, 1832, at the age of seventy-eight years of age, Ambrose applied for and was granted a pension for service in the Revolutionary War. Ambrose and Mary had three additional children after moving to Barren County, all sons. They lived in the southeastern part of the county near what is now called the community of Nobob, Kentucky. The fact that Ambrose established his home in Barren County undoubtedly influenced his brothers to settle there a few years later, and by 1804, all three lived in close proximity to each other in the southeastern part of the county.

Ambrose Huffman died on June 24, 1849 at the age of ninety-five years old, outliving his wife, Mary, by twenty-four years. He was buried in the family cemetery on his farm. His gravesite is the only one of the three brothers that has been identified, and it was rededicated in 1933 and a new headstone placed there. Much of the information about Ambrose Huffman and his descendants has been lost, yet much has also been recovered. This endeavor presents that information for future generations and other interested readers.

Notes for AMBROSE HUFFMAN:

American Revolutionary War Veteran

Ambrose Huffman was drafted on July 1, 1780 in Culpeper County, Virginia as a militiaman with the rank of Private in the First Virginia Regiment, First Virginia Troops, Continental Army. He served for the duration of his eighteen-month enlistment under Captains Posey, Campbell and Morgan and Colonels Ford and Davis, who were all under the direct command of General Nathaniel Green. Ambrose participated in the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780 and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. In the action at Camden he suffered a severe wound to his left arm. On January 1, 1782, Ambrose Huffman received his discharge from the army. He was 26 years old.

The military actions in Maryland and the Carolinas in which Ambrose Huffman took part during the American Revolution are briefly described in the following excerpt from "The Encyclopedia of Military History," written by Col. R. Ernest Dupuy & Col. Trevor N. Dupuy, and published by Harper and Roe, New York, 1970:

"British forces under Cornwallis swept north and capped his success in the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780. The American forces were completely routed, the gallant Baron de Kalb was mortally wounded, and the American commander, Horatio Gates, fled from the field, outdistancing his officers and men in retreat. Patriot defense was broken in the Carolinas, where Sumter and Andrew Pickens harassed the invaders. The American cause was advanced, however, with the remarkable Battle of King's Mountain on October 7, 1780, where bands of frontier riflemen under Isaac Shelby, John Sevier, and William Campbell surrounded a British raiding party under Patrick Fergusson; the British commander fell, and his men surrendered.

"This victory prefaced the campaign fought in North Carolina by General Nathaniel Green, who had been appointed to succeed Gates. Of his notable lieutenants were Light-Horse Harry Lee and Daniel Morgan. It was Morgan at the head of the raiding party who met and all but annihilated Cornwallis's raiders under the command of Banastre Tartleton at Cowpens on January 17, 1781. Cornwallis, with 1900 men, pushed north and at Guilford Courthouse, on March 15, 1781, attacked Green, who had chosen his ground carefully. Although, technically, Cornwallis won a victory over Green's troops by driving the American forces from the field of battle, his success was costly with 93 killed and 439 wounded against 78 Americans killed and 183 wounded."

The following letter is a copy of correspondence from the U.S. Army written in the 1930's concerning the

The following is taken from an Affidavit for Pension Application, filed by Ambrose Huffman in the Barren County, Kentucky Circuit Court. The Ambrose Huffman family cemetery is located in Barren County, Kentucky. Travel east on Highway #90 from the downtown city-square of Glasgow. After proceeding approximately 9.4 miles, just after passing through the small town of Eighty Eight, Kentucky, you will encounter the intersection of Wilburn Road. Turn right and travel approximately 1.5 miles until you reach a sharp right-hand curve in the road. At that curve on the left will be Watts Creek Road, and at that intersection is located the well-kept cemetery with approximately twelve graves. Ambrose Huffman's grave is located in the back, just to the right corner. There is a Sons of the American Revolution marker that has been placed at the foot of the grave. A military headstone is inscribed with information about the soldier. The cemetery is located on what was once the Milford Hood farm. In December of 1997, the farm was sold and the current owner is unknown. The registration was submitted by John H. Huffman, Sr. of Louisville, Kentucky.

In 1933, the Edmond Rogers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Glasgow, Kentucky dedicated the official marking of Ambrose Huffman's grave in a formal ceremony attended by local and visiting dignitaries. The following is taken from the local newspaper, which covered the event:

The Glasgow Times, dated 1933

"The marking of the grave of the late Mr. Ambrose Huffman in the Cemetery on the farm of Mr. Clyde Lawson, a mile east of Nobob, last Sunday was quite impressive. Quite a large group of patriotic citizens gathered when the ceremony was opened by a very brief introduction delivered by Sgt. A.A. Hoffman of Washington, D.C. The opening prayer was by J.A. Gaines of the Glasgow Baptist Church. An address was then delivered by Mr. Frederick W. Millspaugh, President General of the Sons of the American Revolution, which was well timed and appreciated. He was followed by Mr. Ransom H. Bessett of Louisville, Vice President General of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; followed by Mr. B.C.

HUFFMAN, Armstead, died at his home in Gasper township, age 74. Born in Culpeper County, Virginia, removed from there to Barren County, Kentucky in 1799, to Preble County, Ohio in 1814.

The following notes on Armstead Huffman are taken from The History of Preble County, Ohio, 17981881, by H.Z. Williams (Preble County Historical Society).

"Armstead Huffman was one of the early settlers of Gasper Township, and a prominent useful man. He was born in Virginia in 1788 (?), and was an early emigrant to Barren County, Kentucky, from which state he came to Preble county after marrying Nancy Button. He located on the farm in Gasper, now owned by Porter Webb, when all around was still forest and game plenty. He died in 1859, surviving his wife a quarter of a century. Their children were Ambrose, Thomas M., Sally (Mattocks), Overton, Morgan, Nathan, Nancy (White), Mary (Stephens), Alzina (Campbell), and James. Of these, Ambrose, SAally, Overton, Mary and James are deceased. Morgan and Nancy reside in Eaton, Nathan in Dixon Township, Alzina in Gasper Township, and Thomas M., the oldest of the family, living in Camden. He was born in 1808, and was consequently seven years of age when his parents settled in Gasper, and saw much of the manners of pioneer life. He resided upon the old home farm until 1866, when he removed to his present residence. Mr. Huffman was married in 1831 to Annie Conger, who died in 1877. J. A. Huffman, a prominent citizen of Camden, was their only son, and was born in 1835.

6. Land Grant of Armstead Huffman for 78 acres in Preble County, Ohio, dated March 1825

"In the central and eastern sections of the Township of Gasper, Preble County, there were no churches built at so early a day. But Elder Benjamin Skinner, a Minister of the Baptist Church, frequently held religious services at the dwelling house of Armstead Huffman."

Armstead Huffman, eldest son of Ambrose Huffman, Sr., was born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1785. In his early teens he moved with his family to Barren County, Kentucky, where in 1805 he married Nancy Button. In 1814, he left Barren County, Kentucky and moved his family to Preble County, Ohio, settling on farmland near his maternal grandparents, John and Elizabeth Railsback. They had moved from Barren County, Kentucky to Preble County, Ohio eight years earlier, in 1806. When Armstead moved his family to Ohio, he didn't go there alone. Among his companions were his younger brother, Allen, still unmarried at the time, as well as his sister, Mary Frances and her husband, John Harlan, Jr.

According to records of the General Land Office of the United States, Armstead Huffman purchased two tracts of Federal land on April 24, 1820: Tract No.1 was 78.2 acres located in the western half of the northeast quarter of Section 21, Range 2 East, Township 7 North; Tract No.2 was 77.52 acres located in the eastern half of the southeast quarter of Section 33, Range 2 East, Township 7 North.

The 1850 U.S. Census for Gasper Township, Preble County, Ohio lists Armstead Huffman, 65, Married, Farmer, Real Estate value worth $8000.

The 1858 Land Map of Preble County shows that he owned 157 acres in Section 21, Gasper Twp., Range 3, Township 7).

At his death, Armstead Huffman's Estate Case No. 2261 on file in Preble County, Ohio states that his son, Morgan Huffman, was named as the Administrator. His widow, Margaret, as well as his other heirs, did not wish to serve as Administrator. Thomas Morgan Huffman bought out the shares of the remaining eight heirs. Among the various records it is shown that the "Coffe" was purchased from Stevens & Company for the sum of $10., and the headstone was purchased from Robert S. Miller & Company for $22.

The following letter was written by Allen Huffman to his brother, Edward, who lived in Barren County, Kentucky. He is obviously concerned about the rift between his brothers, Edward and Barnett, stemming from a lawsuit filed against Edward by his brother, Barnett, to collect monies owed by Edward to his father's estate.

April 26, 1851
Preble County, Ohio

I the undersign heir and representative of Ambrose Huffman, deceased, have sold and do
hereby transfer to Edward Huffman all my interests in said estate for value received of Armstead
Huffman.

May the 1, These few lines Brother Armstead sent down to me to send to you. I will know
its best to send them to you. I will try and let you know what I would wish you to do with Father's
estate. In the first place I wish you Brother Edward and Henry to pay yourselves well for taking
care of Father. I now say if there is anything coming to me my wish would be for who ever is

the most need of it to have it. I was thinking that Sister Elizabeth's children would likely to be
as needy as any of you. I know say to Brother Edward and Henry that I sine my right of Father's
estate to you two to do whatever you think and best to do. A line or two let you know that we have
great reason to be thankful to the Lord for Peace health and plenty. It is cold and dry at present.
I am afraid our fruit will be killed to night. I received your letter the 23 of April and was very sorry
to hear of your difficulties. We should try and do to others as we would they should do to us and
live to day as if we had to dye tomorrow. I am still getting lamer but do not suffer much pain.

I was just thinking to fetch my letter to a close but I will turn over and give you little more. I
wish I was over there a few days among you. I think I could straten you all up without any fus.
Know O will say to you all set a day and meat and be friendly and settle your fus for it is a shame
to make a fus over so little. Just meat and straten up and then pay the most neediest. First,
Brother Edward, I think you had better give up the place to some of them and take you some knew
country. So let us all try and live as we would wish we had when we came to have to dye. Now
Brother Barnett as you have under tuch to straten up Father's estate try and do as you would
wish to be done by. Now do not let so little thing brake up friendship and love between brothers.
Let us try and live in peace for our time is but short in this world. I hope you will take no ofence
from these few lines.

(signed) Allen Huffman

Notes for EDWARD HUFFMAN:

The following information pertains to an intra-family lawsuit filed in the Barren County Courts against

Edward Huffman by his brother, Barnett Huffman, who was the Administrator for his father's estate. It seems that after Ambrose Huffman's death, his Estate Inventory revealed that his son, Edward, owed his father $350. for land he had purchased from him. Barnett, being Administrator for his father's estate, sued his brother on behalf of all the other heirs.

Huffman, Jesse Huffman, heirs and other parties.

Barnett Huffman, being appointed administrator by the Barren County Circuit Court, filed

of the Estate revealed the amount for a note of $350.00 owed by Edward Huffman for the
one hundred and ninety acres that he had purchased from his father, Ambrose Huffman, in
1849 and had not fulfilled the obligation of payment to Ambrose Huffman.

On the first day of March 1851, Edward Huffman appeared in Barren Circuit Court and,
having transfers in hand from other concerned parties in the matter, was informed that a
Judgement had been placed against him of said matter in Court.

Following is the final court document stating the judgement against Edward Huffman:

She was born July 20, 1792 in Madison County, Virginia, and died September 25, 1859 in Barren County, Kentucky.

Notes for BARNETT HUFFMAN:

At the time of Ambrose Huffman's death in 1849, his son, Barnett, was appointed Administrator for his estate. During the financial inventory it was discovered that Barnett's brother, Edward, had owed his father (now the estate) the sum of $350.00 for land he had purchased in 1848, and the debt had never been paid. As the Administrator, Barnett sued his brother in order to collect the debt and put the financial affairs of his late father in order. Evidently, this caused much distress and hard feelings among the family. (See Notes for Ambrose, Allen, and Edward Huffman)

After he retired from farming and after the death of his wife, Nancy, Barnett Huffman lived in the household of his daughter, Huldah Jane Huffman. The 1870 Census for Metcalfe County, Kentucky lists Simpson Bartley, age 43, a farmer and Head of the Household, his wife, Hulda J., age 38, daughter, Manna(?) T. M., age 18, son, Ulyssis T., age 14, son Joseph B. J., age 11, daughter, Willy N. M., age 7, and daughter, Mary E. E. F., age 2. She was born February 10, 1817 in Franklin County, Virginia, and died February 07, 1902 in Eaton, Preble County, Ohio.

Notes for MORGAN HUFFMAN:

HUFFMAN --- Morgan Huffman was born in Barren County, Ky., January 26, 1814, and died at his home in Eaton, Ohio, on Thursday, September 19, 1896, aged 81 years, 7 months and 23 days. When he was only seven months old his parents came to Ohio, which was ever after his home.

He was married November 23, 1834 to Mary Peters and located upon a farm on the West Road near the State line, where he resided with his family for eight years, when he removed for Gasper township, where he lived until twenty-four years ago, when he removed to Eaton, where he afterward lived.

The deceased was one of a family of ten children; six boys and four girls. He was the last of the boys. Two sisters are yet living, Mrs. White and Mrs. Campbell, both of Eaton. He was the father of four daughters, all of whom are living and were present with their mother at the funeral service. He was grandfather to seven children and great-grandfather to one.

The deceased was physically a giant among men. Blessed with a constitution of rare powers and endurance, fatigue was unknown to him. He cleared the timber from the first farm on which he resided, cultivated the fields, worked at the carpenter trade with wonderful success and little fatigue. He was a law-abiding citizen, and served his township as constable for several consecutive terms. He not only officially executed the law, but personally obeyed it. He was frugal and industrious and laid by a little sum, but his love for his children and his interest in them was greater than his love of gold and ease, and he willingly and cheerfully shared his gains with them. He loved his home and provided well for it. He was neighborly and obliging and leaves many friends who formerly shared in his goodness of heart.

During his last severe and painful illness, he was patient and submissive, desiring but little attention and requiring but little service. He enjoyed the service of prayer at his bedside and expressed a desire to depart and be at rest. His funeral was conducted by Rev. J. F. Burnett, of the Christian Church from his home on South Cherry Street.

He was born February 21, 1819 in Gasper Township, Preble County, Ohio, and died April 08, 1902 in Gasper Township, Preble County, Ohio.

More About MARY HUFFMAN: Burial: Mound Hill Cemetery, Eaton, Preble County, Ohio Religion: Methodist

Notes for JOHN WESLEY STEPHENS:

STEPHENS ---- John W. Stephens was born on a farm near Eaton, Ohio, February 21, 1819, and passed into the higher life, April 8, 1902, aged 83 years, 1 month and 17 days. He was the son of John and Margaret Stephens and the 5th child in a family of 3 girls and 6 boys, all of whom are now gone save Martin the youngest of Los Angeles.

He was one of the pioneers of our county, and as such, shared its toils and privations, and saw it grow from a sparsely settled district to its present prosperity, and all his life made his home within its friendly borders, and for over 49 years has been a resident of Eaton, the county seat.

He was united in marriage with Miss Mary Huffman, October 8th, 1842, who passed from earth March 23, 1856, leaving him with three children, all daughters, one of which died in early childhood. On November 24, 1859, he was united in marriage with Miss Martha Brown, who with a son of this marriage and two daughters of the first marriage survive him.

He was of a quiet, unassuming and generous nature; a man of deep thought, extensive reading and rare intelligence, ever being in touch with the current events of the day; was positive, firm and outspoken in his convictions; strong in his likes and dislikes; faithful to his family, loyal to his country, sincere in his friendships, and true to his God.

His religion was of the kind that reaches outward and upward for the betterment of humanity; "bearing malice toward none, having charity for all and doing the right as he saw the right," and hoping for a happy immortality beyond the grave.

His last sickness was borne with that fortitude, so characteristic of his whole life during sieges of sorrow and affliction. In his death the shadows lengthen; the family loses a kind husband and father, the community a worthy neighbor, friend and citizen.
