Glenial Tharpe

 

Glenial Tharpe, 93, of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

 

He was a native of Hart County and was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He served in the Army during World War II, was a Kentucky Colonel and was a former aid to Dwight David Eisenhower. He was the mayor pro tem for the city of Elizabethtown, was a past president of the Elizabethtown Lions Club and past president of the Hardin County Board of Realtors. He was a former member of the Airport Board and the Hardin Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. He was a retired Realtor for Lanz Realty.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar D. and Beatrice Jaggers Tharpe; four brothers, Harold Tharpe, Stokley Tharpe, Darrell Tharpe and Arnold Tharpe, and a sister, Geraldine Tharp.

 

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Alma Jenkins Tharpe; two sons, Dale Tharpe and his wife, Sheila, of Frankfort and Byron Tharpe of Elizabethtown; two daughters, Sharon Jones and her husband, Ken, of Louisville and Natalie O’Neal of Flaherty; a brother, Robert Tharpe of Elizabethtown; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

The funeral Mass is at noon Saturday at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Jeff Hopper officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.

 

Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home where there will be a prayer vigil service at 7 p.m. Friday.
